USE OF RED MUD IN PAVEMENT APPLICATIONS: A REVIEW

Abstract
Red mud is a byproduct generated in the process of extraction of alumina from bauxite. Globally
120 million tonnes of red mud generating annually. Its disposal generates serious environmental pollution. So as
to avoid the burden of disposal, by using this industrial waste by-product as construction material, the benefits
are many folds. This paper provides a review on the possibility of utilizing red mud as a pavement sub grade
material, sub base, base, and as bitumen filler. The review results showed that red mud can be used for the
above purposes. It was also found that stabilizing content is the most important factor in the construction of
pavements. Therefore there is a need to study these experimental studies for pavement substructure are
Unconfined compressive strength (UCS), California bearing ratio (CBR), leaching characteristics of red mud
and for top bitumen, layer softening point, penetration , Dynamic shear Rheometer (DSR) and Multiple stress
creep recovery (MSCR). The stabilizers used along with red mud are lime, gypsum, Portland cement, fly ash,
ground granulated blast furnace slag (GGBS), rice husk ash, and cement kiln dust. Findings indicated that lime
gives better performance among all. The application of red mud in a low percentage as bitumen filler gives
good results. Based on environmental, economic and mechanical benefits it is recommended to use in pavement
substructures, but more care has to be taken while using red mud as sub grade material. Hence red mud is
recommended to use in the application of pavements. However the road construction area needed to be studied.
