PERFORMANCE EVALUATION OF MMI DATASET ON SIX MACRO EXPRESSIONS USING 2D-LDA AND SVM KERNELS

Abstract
Nowadays facial expression recognition (FER) is a substantial research area. The development of
robust hand-crafted feature descriptors is a challenging task hence itís the motivation behind this work. From
this motivation a performance evaluation model is proposed in this paper using two-dimensional linear
discriminant analysis (2D-LDA) and support vector machine (SVM) to classify six different emotions. In this
work, a 2D-LDA scatter matrix geometric feature descriptor is developed whereby an objective function which
extracts facial landmark features is determined by a set of two matrix transformations. The objective function
fetched from the first transformation is fed into a second transformation which determines the optimum vector
to represent most significant image features. Finally, an SVM classifier is used for emotion classification. The
MMI dataset is used as the primary dataset for experiments conducted on three kernels: linear, polynomial, and
radial basis function (RBF). The results obtained indicate that RBF and polynomial kernels achieve high
accuracy results i.e 73.58% on RBF kernel and 75.47% on polynomial kernel with degree 1 respectively. A
comparison of state-of-art techniques with MMI dataset results indicate that the proposed model efficiency
provides outstanding results than the existing models.
