TAI STUDIES IN ASSAM

Dr. Punyaprova Boruah.

Abstract
The Tai communities of India comprise of the Ahom, Kahmti, Phake, Khamyeng, Aiton and Turung. They live in
the provinces of Arunachal, Assam and Meghalaya. Tai studies on Tai community has gathered importance at both the
national and international level. The interest on these studies is not only limited to Tai people but also spread among non Tai
people. In Assam also Tai studies receives its due importance among both Tai and Non- Tai scholars. The first international
coference on Thai Studies held in New Delhi, 1981, where a group of enthusiast scholars from Assam participated and after
that they formed Tai Literacy Association of Assam (Ban Ok Pap Lik Mung Tai) and published many books. There are many
organisations in Assam who are organizing seminars, conferences on Tai studies.There are several papers are read in
seminars and discussed and being published in Assamese, English and Tai language. Such types of discussion, research of
Tai Community and itís culture is mostly done in Assamese language are not getting popularity till date though many studies
were done in English language.Many articles about Tai studies in Assam is hidden in darkness till now. The study will help
in bringing the hidden treasure to light.
