NITRATE REDUCTASE COMPORTMENT UPON SALINITY STRESS: A REVIEW

Abstract
Salt stress is the major abiotic stress affecting crop productivity and its yield up to 20%
worldwide. Nitrogen assimilation is the major process affecting the growth of crops. Salt stress affects the
nitrogen assimilation process by reducing the activity of two major enzymes: Nitrate reductase (NR) and Nitrite
reductase (NiR). The key regulatory enzyme in the assimilation of nitrogen is NR. Growth reduction in plants
mainly attributed to different biochemical mechanisms in crops by observing them morphologically. Excessive
salt reduces the water-absorbing capacity of crops due to the presence of different toxic ions and an increase in
osmotic pressure. Salt stress response is a multigenic process which involves many tolerance mechanisms.
Nowadays researchers are trying to understand and explore the mechanism of salt tolerance involving genes. In
the present review, the regulatory network of Nitrate reductase has been discussed explaining the regulation of
NR and its expression in the presence of salt stress conditions in different plants.
