PERFORMANCE OF FLY-ASH GEOPOLYMER COMPRESSED BRICK UNDER AMBIENT TEMPERATURE

Abstract
Bricks are a widely used construction and building material around the world. Conventional bricks areproduced from
clay with high temperature kiln firing or from ordinary Portland cement (OPC) concrete, and thus contain highembodied energy and have large carbon footprint. In many areas of the world, there is already a shortage of natural
source material for production of the conventional bricks. So to overcome this issue an alternative to conventional brick
is required, so alkali activated geopolymeric bricks seems to be the most advantageous as they can incorporate high
content of wastes. It signifies the potential use of waste materials to form alkali-activated brick as an alternate,
sustainable and cost effective masonry option, giving rise to Portland cement free products. The scope of the present
study included the utilisation of geopolymer binders in the manufacturing process of masonry units. An attempt was
made to examine the properties of geopolymer brick using fly ash (pozzolanic material) as a waste material, natural sand
as filler and Sodium hydroxide (NaOH) as an alkali activated agent of varying molarity (3M, 5M, 8M, 10M). A
compressed brick of size 230mm X 108mm X 75mm was constructed with density 1850 kg/m3
with material
proportioning of 35% Fly Ash and 65% Natural Sand with Liquid to Binder Ratio of 0.37. This brick was air cured under
room temperature for a time of 28 days.The influence of parameters on physico-mechanical and durability related
properties are evaluated.
