ANTI-PARKINSON'S ACTIVITY OF EMBLICA OFFICINALIS AND TERMINALIA BELLIRICA

  • Abstract
    In the present study, methanolic extracts of fruits of Emblica officinalis (EOM) and Terminalia
    bellirica (TBM) were screened for their anti-Parkinson's activity. Haloperidol (1 mg kg-1) was given to male
    Wistar rats to induce catalepsy and Parkinsonís disease-like symptoms. Effect of EOM and TBM (300 mg kg-1,
    p.o.) pretreatment was observed on behavioural parameter like catalepsy and biochemical parameters like lipid
    peroxidation (LPO), glutathione (GSH), catalase (CAT) and superoxide dismutase (SOD). The increased
    cataleptic score induced by haloperidol was found to be significantly reduced with the EOM and TBM
    pretreatment given orally for five days each at a dose of 300 mg kg-1. Haloperidol treatment showed significant
    increase in lipid peroxidation level and depleted superoxide dismutase, catalase, and glutathione levels, whereas
    daily administration of EOM and TBM (300 mg kg-1, p.o.) significantly attenuated lipid peroxidation level and
    enhanced superoxide dismutase, catalase, and glutathione levels. Thus, the study demonstrates that EOM and
    TBM treatments significantly attenuate the symptoms of catalepsy and protects the brain from oxidative stress
    by modulation of oxidative stress markersí profile.
