TREND AND PATTERN OF POPULATION GROWTH IN NORTH-EAST INDIA

Abstract
Population is the most significant factor in the whole process of socio-economic development. Population growth is
the change in the number of individuals in a population over time. It is caused by fertility, mortality and migration.
The growth of population has taken place due to both natural growth and migration. The rapid growth of population
is a global issue in the developing countries like India. As per the 2011 census, the size of India’s population is
about 1.21 billion along with a decadal growth rate of population is 17.70%. So, India is the second largest populous
country all over the world.
North-Eastern Region of India is landlocked and sandwiched between foreign countries of China,
Myanmar, Nepal, Bangladesh and Bhutan. North-East India includes eight states namely – Arunachal Pradesh,
Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Tripura and Sikkim. According to 2011 census of India, the total
population of North-East India is 45 million and it constitutes about 7.9% of the country’s total geographical area.
The present study makes an attempt to analyze the trend and pattern of population growth in North-East India.
