EFFECT OF ELLIPTICAL TRAINER ON OXIDATIVE STRESS AND ANTIOXIDANT STATUS IN DIABETIC WOMEN TYPE 2

Abstract
The oxidative stress (OS) induced by hyperglycaemia in type 2 diabetes
mellitus (T2DM) can be managed by increased physical activity. Aim: This study aimed to investigate the
effect elliptical training (ET) on oxidants and antioxidants in T2DM women. Methods: Sixty T2DM
women aged 40-50 years old with body mass index (BMI) 30-34.9 kg/m2 were randomly selected and
divided to study and control groups, 30 patients for each group. Study group received supervised moderate
4-month aerobic exercise on elliptical trainer 3 sessions/week in addition to home walking program for 30
minutes day after day out of exercise session while the control group received their prescribed medications
only. Fasting blood glucose (FBG), plasma malondialdehyde (MDA) as OS marker, erythrocyte superoxide
dismutase (eSOD), and reduced glutathione (rGSH) as antioxidative enzymes were measured before and
after the training. Results: Comparison of pre and post values by paired test revealed that the study group
showed a high significant decrease of FBG (227.57.92 vs 186.09 10.22) and plasma MDA levels
(1.120.15 vs 0.950.04 Mmol/L, p=0.004). Also, there was a high significant increase of plasma eSOD
(184.6213.14 vs 200.0310.61 units/ml, p=0.002) and rGSH (2.760.25 vs 3.140.13 Mmol/L, p=0.003).
All measured variables in control group were showed no significant improvement. Conclusion: By
increasing the antioxidants, ET may stand as a defense mechanism against oxidative stress in T2DM
women.
