Abstract
Background: It is a well-established fact that micro-organisms play a vital role in initiating and sustaining the
root canal infection. With time, more bio-friendly herbs have been tried and have given significant better results
in providing better alternative for root canal irrigation. Hence; the present study was conducted for assessing
antimicrobial efficacy of two different herbal extracts used as an endodontic irrigant.
Materials & methods: 60 freshly extracted permanent mandibular first premolars were included. De-coronation
of all the specimens was done followed by preparation of canal. Pure strain of Enterococcus faecalis and
Candida albicans were used. Whole plants of Curcuma Longa and Azadiracta indica were obtained. Sterile test
tubes containing 5 ml of BHI broth were inoculated with 5 105 E. Faecalis and C.albicans respectively. Visual
inspection of presence of turbidity was done for assessing the growth. The minimum inhibitory concentration
was determined. Following study groups were formed: Group A: Irrigation was done with saline (negative
control), Group B: Irrigation was done with CL, and Group C: Irrigation was done with AI. All the results were
recorded in Microsoft excel sheet and were analysed by SPSS Software.
Results: Mean bacterial load within root canal for E. faecalis for group A, group B and group C was 25.36,
33.19 and 29.11 respectively. On analysing statistically, non- significant results were obtained. In the present
study, mean fungal load within root canal for E. faecalis for group A, group B and group C was 22.96, 33.48 and
30.11 respectively. On analysing statistically, non- significant results were obtained.
Conclusion: Herbal extracts have significant antimicrobial potential and hence can be used as adjuvant for root
canal irrigation.

Key words: Azadiracta indica, Anti-microbial, Curcuma Longa, Herb, Root canal irrigants
