IN VITRO BIODEGRADATION OF POLYETHYLENE BY LYSINIBACILLUS FUSIFORMIS STRAIN Ma-Su

Abstract
Biodegradation of pristine and blended low density polyethylene film has been studied in-vitro using
Lysinibacillus fusiformis strain Ma-Su, isolated from the municipal compost soil. The degradation of polyethylene
film was investigated with the parameters of carbonyl indexes, wettability, tensile strength, elongation at break and
surface adhesion. The microbial growth was monitored using plate counting method and total protein content at
different intervals of time. The bacterial growth on the pre-treated films and was showing 21 X 103 CFU/ml in
pre-treated LDPE sample and 25 X 103 CFU/ml in pre-treated BPE10. The pre-treated LDPE with the bacterium
slowly reduced its Keto carbonyl index (CI) from 7.4 to 5. The BPE10 sample showed a marked reduction of Keto
CI from 8 to 3.1. The pre-treated LDPE showed a decrease in contact angle from 96.14 to 87.77, the BPE 10
showed more aggressive reduction from 97.72 to 82.04. Surface changes were observed by SEM.
