Abstract
This paper considers the global competitiveness of the countries of the world during the period 2013 - 2017. The study consisted of several stages and was based on data published on the official websites of the World Economic Forum and the Institute of Management Development (IMD). In this regard, we studied the stages of development of the process of assessing global competitiveness in the global economy, and highlighted the strengths and weaknesses of the methods of well-known rating agencies. We also studied the leading countries in terms of their global competitiveness, strategies and their competitive advantages, and identified priority areas for the development of the economies of countries under consideration during the analyzed period. In total, according to the results of 2013-2017, several leading countries in terms of global competitiveness were identified, including Hong Kong, Switzerland, Singapore, the USA, and the Netherlands. A high level of competitiveness was observed among countries that are leaders in such indicators as innovation and R&D, provided that infrastructure is well developed, including financial one. The priority areas of the policy of the leaders of global competitiveness are as follows: technology development, human capital development, investment activity development. A feature of existing methods for assessing global competitiveness is the availability of a wide range of data for analysis, the use of a large number of indicators, and a wide range of countries analyzed.
