TESTED AND TRIED VOCABULARY TEACHING STRATEGIES: BY EFL TRAINERS AT JAZAN UNIVERSITY

Abstract
The word-stock or vocabulary is the expanse of words an individual hold. Vocabulary expansion in EFL learners is much sought after topic of the present EFL trends. In this context many vocabulary teaching and learning strategies have shot up. To be able to converse and overcome the communication barriers, one needs a considerable comprehension of the language. English as a ‘Global Language’ calls its learners and trainers to get acquainted with various vocabulary learning and teaching strategies. This paper focuses on the five best teaching strategies at Jazan University, Saudi Arabia with an offshoot to learners’ cognitivity at varied levels across the university campuses. Vocabulary teaching strategies are one of the most practiced components at Jazan University. EFL trainers adopt various vocabulary teaching strategies and keep a check of their learners’ cognition periodically. In this regard to be constructive, the trainers employ English Club Activities as well. For the purpose of this study a quantitative analysis of EFL trainers’ responses has been taken. A survey consisting of questionnaire on a 5- Point Likert Scale was formulated and responses were collected with the aid of Google Forms. The proposed best five vocabulary teaching strategies are; 1) Practice of Contextual Clues including Probing 2) Practice of Antonyms and Synonyms 3) Practice of Miming/Gestures 4) Illustrating through Pictures 5) Use of First Language Translation. The second part of the questionnaire covers the cognitivity of the EFL learners at varied levels ranging from advanced to beginners across the university campuses. The data was compiled into valuable findings with the help of ANOVA techniques and the flow of the study advances with a review of the literature. Finally, the paper ends with recommendations in the discussion section and implications for further studies.
