PEDAGOGICAL STRATEGIES FOR TEACHING COUNSELLING THEORETICAL COURSES: THE NEEDS TO NURTURE PSYCHOLOGICAL ASPECT

Abstract
The learning process for such a challenging goal requires an authentic pedagogical process which allows individual to adopt, adapt and modifying theoretical knowledge into reasonable practices. For these challenges trainee school counsellors is expected to have psychological strength as an individual. However, the existing pedagogical practices in counsellor training among Malaysians Institute of Teacher Education (IPGM) was claimed to have certain implication towards teacher’s counsellor service quality and the psychological aspect of counsellor themselves. Therefore, in order to confirm this assumption a qualitative research design was carried out to explore the pedagogical practice of lecturers in teaching the counselling theoretical courses, and to identify the nurture psychological aspect among trainee school counsellors. Five senior lecturers with at least ten years’ experience in counselling education were selected as participants in semi-structured interviews. Findings indicate that learning methods such as experiential learning, cooperative learning, and case study need to be included in teaching and learning for counselling theoretical courses. The finding also indicated that pedagogical practices should also provide a platform to nurture psychological aspects such as self-efficacy and grit among trainee school counsellors in a support of properly structured learning material to enhance the knowledge and skills of theoretical applications. Overall, this study gives a useful implication in the counsellor training program, especially for the purpose of designing a pedagogical module to nurture the psychological aspect and to enhance the knowledge and skills of theoretical application competencies among trainee school counsellors.
