PROFITABILITY OF SUGARCANE CULTIVATION IN INDIA: A STATEWISE ANALYSIS

Abstract
In this paper, an attempt is made to analyze the major changes in the profitability of sugarcane cultivation in India from the period of covering 2004-2005 to 2013-14. This study has collected data from the Commission for Agricultural Costs and Prices (CACP). It is used cost of cultivation data of various years in sugarcane cultivation. After the empirical testing of the data only, major sugarcane cultivating states were selected and also categorized into two viz., Higher Area and Higher Productivity and Higher Area Lower Productivity states in India. For HAHP states, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu have been selected whereas Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra were chosen for HALP states in India. The study has shown that the profitability of sugarcane cultivation over cost A2 and cost C2 in Karnataka is high about Rs. 31488/ha and Rs. 21,425/ha in 2009-2010. During 2010-2011, the profitability of Tamil Nadu state is seemed to be high about Rs. 19894/ha and Rs. 13499/ha. The study revealed that sugarcane productivity is found to be high in Tamil Nadu when compared to other states in India. However, among the selected states, Maharashtra is the only state incurred loss of about Rs. 808/ha and Rs. 1809/ha during 2005-2006 and 2007-2008. The result of the study revealed that the profitability of sugarcane cultivation is found to be high in Karnataka, followed by Tamil Nadu and Uttar Pradesh states during the study period.
