Abstract
Contagious or infectious diseases are one of the major causes of death. Epidemics are a serious threat to public health and a global challenge and management the of these epidemics is very difficult. In December 2019 the world has come to know a new corona virus disease named COVID-19. It has affected mainland China mostly and has spread to all continents of the world except Antarctica. Patients mostly have come with a flu-like illness and non-specific gastrointestinal symptoms to a lesser extent. In most cases, home isolation is effective. However, cases of moderate to severe pneumonia and acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) require hospitalization and few cases need mechanical ventilation. Older adults with a pre-existing medical illness suffer more. The disease is officially named as Coronavirus Disease-2019 (COVID-19, by WHO on February 11, 2020). It is also named as Severe Pneumonia with Novel Pathogens on January 15, 2019 by the Taiwan CDC, the Ministry of Health and is a notifiable communicable disease of the fifth category. Person-to-person transmission may occur through droplet or contact transmission and if there is a lack of stringent infection control or if no proper personal protective equipment available, it may jeopardize the first-line healthcare workers. With its highly contagious nature and increasing panic among nations, the world is waiting for definitive newer treatment options and a potential vaccine.

Key words: Pandemic, COVID 19, ARDS, WHO
