EVALUATION OF COASTAL VULNERABILITY INDEX FOR THE KERALA COAST

Abstract
The coastal districts of Kerala have experienced drastic changes in landforms due to natural and anthropogenic
activities and are potentially vulnerable to erosion hazard. Districts such as Ernakulam, Kasaragod and
Thiruvananthapuram are identified to be the most vulnerable districts of Kerala from this study. The coastal region
of Kerala is highly affected by the effect of coastal erosion and global warming. Remotely sensed spatial and
temporal data employs a better way to analyze the situation using GIS (Geographic Information System). Weighted
overlay analysis in remote sensing techniques were implemented to identify the coastal vulnerabilities in the study
area. The highly vulnerable regions of coastal districts have increased from 1.39% to 12.97% over the years 2005 to
2015, mostly in Ernakulam and Kasargod districts. However, due to mitigation measures, vulnerability in several
parts of districts such as Kozhikode, Malappuram and Kollam have decreased slightly over the years. The low
vulnerable region in the coastal districts has increased by 1.17%. This study has helped to identify the vulnerable
zones of the coastal region of Kerala. Thus, providing better management plans for coastal vulnerabilities occurring
in the study area.
