THE SPENDING HABITS OF UNIVERSITY STUDENTS

Abstract
The ability to manage finances is an advantage for students to lead a better life at university. Knowledge of financial management
can help students determine their priorities in spending. This study aimed at determining the level of first-year studentsí knowledge
of financial management and also determining the tendency of studentsí spending habits. This study will also determine the
relationship between students' financial management knowledge level and spending tendency and determine which factors
influence their spending tendency. A total of 400 University a diploma students were selected as respondents for this study.
University A is located in the suburbs. The findings show that the level of financial management knowledge among students is at a
mean level of 2.64 and that the level of student spending is also at a moderate level of 2.94. Meanwhile, there was a simple and
significant relationship between student knowledge level and spending tendency with a correlation coefficient r = .631 (p <0.05);
and food buying factors were identified as the predictors of the most influential factor in spending among students with a .191 Beta
value of significance at p <0.05.
