LABORATORY EVALUATION OF BITUMEN EMULSION STABILIZED BASES WITH RECYCLED CONCRETE AGGREGATES AND STONE DUST

Abstract
The bitumen-emulsion stabilized materials (BESM) have become familiar due to their better
performance as compared to the conventional granular layers. These materials enabled the enhancement of the
usage of recycled materials. The present paper evaluated the bitumen-emulsion stabilized mixes with stone dust,
different proportions (25, 50 and 75%) of Recycled Concrete Aggregates (RCA) and two stacks of natural
aggregates (NA). The mechanical characterization is studied for the BESMs with 1.5% cement and 3% water. The
specimens are prepared with Bitumen Emulsion Contents (BEC) of 6, 7, 8 and 9% by weight of the dry aggregates.
The compacted specimens are cured with the mould for 24hours (at 252oC) and without the mould for 72hours
(at 40oC). Firstly, the cured specimens are tested for Indirect Tensile Strength, and Optimum Bitumen Emulsion
Content (OBEC) is determined. Later, the mechanical characteristics like Marshall Stability, Resilient Modulus
(MR) and durability in terms of Tensile Strength Ratio (TSR) are studied. Finally, the repeated load test (RLT) is
conducted for investigating the fatigue resistance according to the guidelines given in ASTM-D4123. Multiple
Linear Regression analysis is carried and a model for the number of load applications causing the fatigue failure
(Nf) is developed. The results showed a decrease in MR with an increase in RCA content at OBEC. From this
research study, it is concluded that the BESMs with RCA can be adopted for the construction of the bases
stabilized bitumen-emulsion for design traffic less than 1 million equivalent standard axles (mesa).
