HETEROGENEOUS SMART ANTENNA IN MULTI-HOP WIRELESS NETWORK USING MAC PROTOCOL

Abstract
Using smart antenna in homogeneous multi hop wireless networks with all nodes having same
antenna capabilities will have certain applications, the network range will be limited and simple form of
node cooperation called retransmit diversity cannot bring great gains. But in the proposed system by using
heterogeneous smart antenna the simple form of node cooperation can bring great gains. We then present
several key properties concerning node cooperation in HSANs along side analytical reasoning. In the
process, we identify a fundamental trade-off between exploiting smart antenna gain and cooperation gain
that undermines the power of HSANs to leverage node cooperation to their maximum potential. To address
this trade-off, we then present an adaptive cooperation mechanism and incorporate this mechanism
through the planning of an easy but efficient MAC protocol. The performance of the MAC protocol is
evaluated through ns2 simulations alongside a sensible physical layer channel model for smart antenna
environments.
