Abstracts
Witchcraft is considered as superstitious belief and practice that is prevalent in tribal societies. Tribal beliefs were
considered as unscientific practices and social evils of contemporary society in Assam and other parts of India.
There are followers and believers of superstitious beliefs and practices in tribal societies. However, recent studies
reveal that there are emerging evidences of witchcraft is causing due to illiteracy and lack of health care facilities,
backwardness among various communities. Lack of scientific tempers and access to knowledge among various
sections of society even after the spread of education are responsible for believing in witchcraft in the societies of
Assam and other states. Superstitious beliefs and practices have resulted in social conflict and violence in tribal
societies. It has also led to social divisions in backward communities. This paper studies the tribal beliefs and
practices in the light of witchcraft and superstitions in the contemporary society with special reference to various
tribal communities of Assam.
