SOFT COMPUTING TECHNIQUES FOR FACIAL EXPRESSION RECOGNITION

Abstract
This paper proposes an artificial neural network for facial expression recognition. Viola-Jones algorithm is presented for face detection, and a hybrid approach of Local Binary Pattern (LBP) and Histogram of Oriented Gradient (HOG) is suggested for feature extraction. Moreover, Relief-based algorithm is implemented to select the most substantial features to reduce the system complexity in terms of the system processing time. Intensive experiments and qualitative comparisons with the most related work to the theme of this paper are conducted. The Japanese Female Facial Expression database is used to evaluate the accuracy of system performance. The achieved results show that the performance of the developed hybrid approach outperforms particularly for low number of facial expression classes. The best average recognition rate achieves 100%, 97%, and 88% for 3, 5, and 7 facial expressions respectively. The processing time was 0.354s, 0.417s, and 0.651s for 3, 5, and 7 facial expressions respectively.
