TITANIUM BASED DENTAL IMPLANT SURFACE CHARACTERIZATION: A SYSTEMATIC REVIEW

Abstract
In the present scenario, dental implants have proven to be a very promising and popular treatment modality for partial and completely edentulous arches. The biological interactions between the implant surface and surrounding bone known as osseointegration are regulated by certain local, systemic factors, biologic factors and clinician and implant- related factors. The primary stability and a beneficial interaction of the implant depends on its surface roughness. The placement of the implant is followed by a sequence of bone turnover events that result in de novo bone formation and deposition on the implant surface. Many studies have been conducted in this field that involve surface treatment of implants such as thermal treatment, blasting, etching, coatings, and even sterilization procedures. These techniques have led to a major advancement in implant dentistry. The present paper reviews the various macrotopographical, microtopographical and nanotopographical features of an implant surface and the different techniques available to create suitable roughness starting from basic (machined implants) to the latest techniques.
