TEACHERíS EFFORTS IN HELPING STUDENTS IMPROVE IN THE LEARNING PROCESS

Nilda O. Babaran.

Abstract
Studentsí success or failure in completing all the course requirements lies not only on their hands but also on the hands of the teachers. This study revisited the cause of lack of requirements and dropping out of college students as basis on how to help students improve in the learning process. Data obtained from the course syllabus, test items in three periodic examinations, and class records of Social Science 16 class were analyzed through content analysis and descriptive statistics such as frequency, mean and percentage. The results revealed that students failed to surpass the expected difficulties related to the learning content. It was also found that students with higher number of absences failed to accomplish the course requirements. Teachers as well failed to make complete records on studentís needs and progress. The teacher-made tests in three periodic examinations require route memory that made students hardly answer each item. As a result, some students failed to fulfil the expected learning outcome of the course. Thus, this study proposed some interventions and strategies to assist students to finish the course. It is also recommended that teachers should keep records on studentsí needs and progress as primary basis in designing appropriate intervention to improve studentsí participation in class.

Key words: academic performance, course requirements, teaching-learning process, and studentsí improvement
