FOOD INSECURITY AND SOCIODEMOGRAPHIC PROFILE OF ELDERLY CAREGIVERS IN THE RURAL HOUSEHOLDS OF LESOTHO

Lisebo Mothepu.

Abstract
The ageing population is increasing globally, and the majority of Africans reach old age after a prolonged period of poverty due to multiple dynamics, such as famine, war, the indirect impact of HIV and AIDS, and insufficient access to food. The increase in food insecurity has caused poor food intake and a low quality of food, which has resulted in households using different food-coping strategies (FCS) to relievefood inadequacy. Hence, this study hopes to determine the relationship between the sociodemographic profile and the level of food stress and the patterns of food-coping strategies inthe households of the elderly people. The study population consistsof 260 men (n=75) and women (n=185) aged 60 years and above, using observational, cross-sectional, and quantitative research approaches. Data were gathered using the sociodemographic and food-coping strategy questionnaires on the elderly population in the rural households of Mpharane in Lesotho. Less than half (44.20%) of the participants spend R300.00 to R400.00 per month on food, 61 per cent often had a shortage of money to buy food, and all the participants were unemployed. All 15 FCSwere used, and the highest commonly used FCS was areduction in the number of meals eaten in the day by the participants and reduction in the portion sizes at mealtimes. The study concludes that demographic pressures increased financial strains which contributed to high levels of poverty, thereby resulting in food and nutrition insecurity and the poor nutritional status of the elderly people.

Key words: food insecurity, elderly population, socioeconomics, food-coping strategies
