GENETIC PLANT IDENTIFIER FOR IDENTIFICATION OF MEDICINAL PLANTS

Abstract
Medicinal plants are major sources of medicines. Nowadays when looking at its physical properties, it is difficult to identify the plants. A specialist in this field may recognize the plant but recognizing a plant of the rare category is very difficult for a layman without an automated computerized approach. Hence there is a need to the design and develop an application for automatic identification of medicinal plants. Also, there is a need to optimize the features of medicinal plants so that computational time for plant identification will be less and the accuracy will be increased. This article proposes design and development of a system called Genetic Plant Identifier which accurately identifies medicinal plants from the features extracted. Features like rectangularity, circularity, perimeter, and color, etc. are extracted after preprocessing of the leaf imageswhich then are optimized with the help of Genetic Algorithm. As a result 83 percent reduction in the feature set have been observed. The machine learning algorithms for instance the Naive Bayes, Support Vector Machine (SVM), K-Nearest Neighbor(KNN), Multi-Layer Perceptron (MLP) and Logistic Regression are provided with the optimized features as an input for identification of their species. It is been observed that the percentage improvement in accuracy for MLP is higher i.e. 16.59 percent as compared to others. The average performance considering all five algorithms is 4.5 percent.
