A STUDY OF SAFETY AND GENERAL TECHNICAL ISSUES IN THE CONSTRUCTION INDUSTRY USING STATISTICAL APPROACH, AND REMEDIAL MEASURES

Abstract
The construction industry contributes significantly to the economy of a country. There are many stakeholders such as contractors, sub-contractors, owners and suppliers of materials and labour involved. It is they who are responsible to complete a project within the stipulated time and cost. But they pay little attention to the safety of men at the work place, be they directors, managers, supervisors or labourers. Unless safety norms are followed there is risk of injury while lifting and handling materials and preparing and climbing scaffolds. Accidents are common since there is little awareness of risk involved among the labourers. Rules and regulations of safety are seldom followed as in other industries. The labourers shift to different projects under different managers/engineers constantly and are hardly given training on safety. This study is concentrated specifically on issues related to safety in the construction industry. Through survey of questionnaires distributed among different levels of workers, the safety level is evaluated. Based on results of the questionnaire surveys, construction site was selected for a safety education program targeting worker safety. The levels of awareness of the workers are understood through questionnaire and they collected before and after the program of training on safety. The t-test of the study marks the significance of the safety learning program.
